Friday Foto

A while ago, the comments to one of the Friday Foto’s, Becca and I talked about some of the work my Mother had done in the Church. I mentioned that she had made many of the fine linen altar cloths, including the embroidery on them and the lace trimming them. Here are a couple of pictures of the lace work on two of the altar cloths that Mum made. The pictures only show small sections — the cloths are trimmed along one edge; one is about two metres long, the other about three metres long.

Mum was very talented with needle and thread; and it’s always a pleasure to see her work still being used in Church. She taught a number of people at Church to embroider and make lace. And always found something for people to help with on any project she worked on, no matter their skill level. She recognized that they were offering something special to God; and Mum believed very strongly in nurturing someone’s ministry however small or large it might be. It’s something I try very hard to emulate.

    Oh lovely!!

She even taught us about lace making when we were little.

Even as very young toddlers you would both sit enthralled by those bobbins flying back and forth, and the complex patterns they wove. :)

  2. Becca says:

    I vaguely remember.

I also remember that she used to do it with such abandon – barely even concentrating!

When she got to a complicated bit she would have to concentrate a bit more. The main thing I could never quite get my head around was the number of bobbins on some pieces. It was hundreds sometimes — five or six hundred — but she just used to do them in sections.
