Friday Foto

This is a picture of the font in Godmanchester Church. The font itself is thirteenth century, but the base was put in, when the font was moved, in 1921. This is the font I was baptised in as a little baby way back in 1958.

  1. Lovely picture Paul. You can really see the difference in age between the font and the base — the font itself looks positively weatherbeaten in comparison to the base. The light from the stained glass window on the pillar looks great.

    • Thanks Andy.

The font itself did spend a number of years outside, so weather-beaten is an apt description. It was discovered in the grounds of one of the big houses by the Church: I think in 1921 when it was given its new base. I’ve no idea how long it had been outside for, or why it was taken out of the Church. Hope I’ve got that story right, it’s a memory of something I was told many years ago.
