Friday Foto

Following last week’s photograph of The Way of Life sculpture inside Ely Cathedral, I thought, this week, I’d give a glimpse of the outside of this magnificent building. This is one of my favourite views, showing the west façade. I think I particularly like this view because it’s what you can see from quite a long way out on my journey in across the Fens from Huntingdon.

The view from the top of the tower is stunning. I climbed the 288 steps to the top of the 65.5 metre tower many years ago, when I was fit — sadly, I wouldn’t manage it now.

The canon you can see in the foreground of the picture was captured from the Russians in Sebastopol and given to Ely City by Queen Victoria in 1860 after the Crimean War. Her gift was in recognition of the successful formation of the Ely Rifle Volunteers.
