This is a picture of the altar in the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral. Behind the altar you can see the remains of what, I imagine, would have been a truly magnificent reredos. But this, like the rest of the statuary and decoration in the chapel, was destroyed in the sixteenth century during the Reformation — which, in keeping with Puritan convictions, rejected all forms of religious decoration. It must have looked very different in there when the Lady Chapel was completed in 1349.

      There is damage everywhere you look in that chapel — figures with the heads knocked off etc. — and yet it is really beautiful. I’ve spent hours in there just wandering around, looking at what the reformers left, and just soaking up the atmosphere.
