The mild weather we’ve been experiencing recently appears to be causing some confusion in the garden. Quite a lot of our Passion Flower is dressed in it’s autumn finery, and the flowers are, on the whole, mostly fruit now. But there are still some flowers in full display, and some of the green hardly looks as though it’s even thinking about turning yet. This picture shows quite a lot of the seasonal range that’s visible.

I love the colours of autumn. A few of the shrubs and bushes in the garden are really beginning to show the advancing season. None more so than the Passion Flower. Here is a very ripe fruit with a few leaves that are well on their way towards falling off. The amazing thing is, there are still some flowers in full display.

This time of year sees the flowering of one of my favourite plants in our garden. This is a plant that thrives while so much around it is dying off. Normally we can’t see a great deal of it because a couple of Weigelia shrubs have climbed all over it and use it for support. But in the autumn the flower spikes appear over the top of everything else, and gradually turn to a lovely bright yellow. I’ve no idea what this plant is called, we were given it many years ago, and it has thrived well in a mixed (jungle) area of shrubs. It stands about twelve feet high, and covers a wide area within these shrubs. The leaves are very spiky, almost thistle-like.
