Jesus’ baptism marks for him much the same as baptism does for anyone. It marks a new stage in life, a beginning — a launching into a new life and ministry. That’s what all baptism’s signify, mine, yours, and yes, Jesus’ too. When Jesus went into the water he was an unknown carpenters son. When he came out of the water, he was a man with a mission, a mission to save the world.

In many ways, this Collect for The Baptism of Christ encapsulates many of the essentials of what we believe the Christian faith is all about. Jesus is shown to be God’s Son; we recognize him as our Lord; and because of that we can know that we are loved as children of God.

I don’t actually remember my own baptism, I was only four months old at the time, so no surprise there. But it did mark the beginning of my public Christian journey, just as Jesus’ baptism did for him. However, my journey into a recognized public ministry came many years after my baptism, many years after my confirmation when I was thirteen years old even.

One thing that is different for me than for many Christian ministers, though, is that my church-based ministry doesn’t take place many miles away from where my baptism happened. For I was baptised, and confirmed, in Godmanchester Church, the same Church as, half a century later, I’m a Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) — it’s the only Church I’ve worshipped at regularly throughout my life.

In many ways, because of that lifetime connection with a single Church, I feel as though I am a child of that Church. There are people in the congregation who were there before me, who remember me as a baby, remember me as a rebellious teenager, missed me when I left the Church, and welcomed me back with open arms when I returned.

I’m very fortunate. I know myself as a beloved child of God through my faith in his Son Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour. But I also know myself as a beloved child of the Church that I love, too. And that means a lot, because, for me, the Church is an important part of my faith.

Heavenly Father,
at the Jordan you revealed Jesus as your Son:
may we recognize him as our Lord
and know ourselves to be your beloved children;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

I had the great pleasure of presiding and preaching at Evensong on Sunday — the first time I’ve been able to do the full service in a long while. Hopefully this better spell with my health will last a bit longer this time. I’m struggling a bit with walking, even short distances, but I’ll put up with that. Anyway, here’s the sermon:

You are God’s Temple

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you”
1 Corinthians 3:16

Three Little Pigs
Once upon a time, there were three little pigs. When they left home their Mummy told them, ‘To get on in life, always use the best method: and look out for the big, bad wolf.’ They went off singing, ‘Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? . . . Not me! Not me! Not me!’

The first little pig built his house out of straw, because that was the easiest method and needed little effort.

The second little pig built his house out of sticks, because that was the quickest method and left him time to play.

The third little pig built his house out of bricks. It took him longer, but he knew that was the best method.

Then the big, bad wolf came by. He said to the first little pig, ‘Let me in, let me in, little pig, or I’ll HUFF and I’ll PUFF and I’ll blow your house in.

‘Not me,’ cried the first little pig, ‘not by the hair on my chinny chin chin!’

So the big, bad wolf . . . Well, you know the rest. Only be careful, if you’re telling the story to children, that you don’t miss out the gory endings of the first two pigs, and the wolf himself. Liz tells me that, even the more cynical Children of today, probably know the whole story by heart much better than you or I do, and they’ll never forgive you if you change even one little word!

Of course, it may be that they only know the later, more sanitized, version of the story — which came to us via Walt Disney. In which case, even more care is needed. Because, while the children will probably appreciate and enjoy the gory bits; the parents might not think they’re suitable.

Divisions
Psychologists tell us this story is popular because it teaches children to prefer long-term satisfaction over short-term pleasures. So if your children, when they were teenagers, only seemed to be interested in short-term pleasure, it’s your own fault, because you never told them the story of the three little pigs enough, when they were younger.

But if the message of the story is simply, ‘Be careful how you build,’ that’s one that Saint Paul would have understood. In our New Testament lesson this evening, he was writing to the young and inexperienced church members in the sea-port of Corinth. He’d been told that they were splitting into cliques and factions, a sure sign of immaturity in the Church!

Some claimed to be followers of Apollos, a wise and philosophical Christian preacher from Alexandria. Some said they belonged to Saint Peter’s party. Others said, ‘Never mind the rest, Paul is best.’ That is, Saint Paul — not this Paul!

Saint Paul was not flattered. To him, divisions in the Church were the worst possible news, because they threatened its very survival.

So he uses a picture much like the story of the three little pigs. Remember there were no church buildings in those days; Christians met in private houses. When Paul talks of building up the Church, he means developing its community life.

Building materials
First Paul talks about foundations. Your community isn’t founded on Paul, he says, nor is it founded on Apollos. There’s only one foundation that’s strong enough to withstand the storms: the Church must be built on the foundation of Jesus Christ. And what the Apostles have to do is build on top of that foundation, using the best possible materials.

Build your community life on the foundation of your shared faith in Jesus, and don’t skimp on the time and effort it needs to make a real fellowship. Give to God the best of yourself, then nobody need be afraid of the big bad wolf.

Temple
So, because Saint Paul’s been writing about the church fellowship as if it were a building, and because God is found in the community life of the Church, he says, ‘you are the Temple of God’.

Where should you go to look for God? Some go on long pilgrimages, some climb high mountains, some seek a distant guru. And all the time God’s right there, in your own heart.

God’s Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of every Christian, and especially in the companionship that grows up when Christians meet together to worship God, and to love their neighbours.

Even in a struggling, small congregation, God is there in the midst of them. God loves each congregation of Christians, because he’s made his home there.

Saint Peter writes, in one of his letters, that the church fellowship is a living Temple, and each individual Christian is a living stone in that Temple (1 Peter 2:4-6).

Not an easy picture to visualize, but you realize the implication: you are bricks in the wall of God’s house, and even if one brick is missing, the wall could tumble down.

Make sure you’re in church next Sunday. Or else the big bad wolf might HUFF, and he’d PUFF, and . . . well, I leave the rest to your imagination.

Heavenly Father,
at the Jordan you revealed Jesus as your Son:
may we recognize him as our Lord
and know ourselves to be your beloved children;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
