I can’t remember, now, where I first heard about Loreena McKennitt. My memory does let me down sometimes these days. But this song has almost haunted me since I came across it. And I think it is because of much more than the presentation of the song, which is very good. The words have really struck a chord with me.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. And if it was you who put me on to it, thank you — and do please let me know so that I can acknowledge you.
Edited to add: It was David Chambers — thanks David — please see the first comment below.
The words are based on a poem by St John of the Cross, “The Living Flame of Love”.
“In total darkness John of the Cross finds only light, in cold only warmth, in desperation only Hope, in Hope only Faith, in Faith only Love. Love being greatest of all. Stronger than Fear. Stronger than Evil. Love – The ultimate Protector. Love – The ultimate Motivator. Love – The ultimate Weapon.”

Andrew Gosden (now 18) has been missing from his Doncaster home since 14 September 2007. The search continues.
Hi Paul
Don’t know if it was me who put you on to it blogged it in November http://dlchambers.net/2009/11/dark-night-of-the-soul/ Perhaps it was earlier you heard it.
We used it on our Spiritual Direction Course, I got hooked and bought a copy via iTunes.
Hi David, and welcome to the blog.
Yes. As soon as I saw what you’d written in your post about it, I recognized it. Music has an amazing ability to touch someone, and I’m grateful to you for putting me on to something so meaningful. Thank you.
It would be really good if the CofE church would inform and preach about the ‘dark night of the soul’ to it’s people… I went through the process some years ago, started by a wonderful period within the Catholic Church, who are not afraid to teach such deep spiritual things!
I think you’re right Steve. But it isn’t easy to know just how to start — maybe something to think about around the day we remember John of the Cross (14 December).
